Rookwood is the most prestigious American art pottery, so the range is wide and the decorator matters more than almost anything else. A plain production vase in good condition usually sells for a few hundred dollars, but a hand-decorated piece signed by a named Rookwood artist can run into the thousands, and the very best work by top decorators reaches five and six figures at auction. The reversed-RP flame mark tells you the year (a flame was added each year from 1886), and an artist's cipher next to it is what separates a common production piece from a collectible one. Glaze quality, form and condition then set the price within that tier, so hairlines, chips and grinding-flat repairs pull value down sharply.

How do I date a Rookwood piece?
Count the flames around the reversed-RP mark. Rookwood added one flame a year starting in 1886, and after 1900 they added a Roman numeral for the year below the mark, so the mark itself dates most pieces.
